#64: Lice, Arby’s, Socialism, & Donald Trump
Hey, hey, hey! Margie and Kristen here, back for another round of polling fun and political commentary. It’s a busy week, so buckle up because we’re diving into some of the most bizarre—yet totally important—polling stories we’ve seen.
First up: it seems that Donald Trump is, in fact, less popular than lice and Nickelback. Yes, you read that right. Thanks to a new poll from PPP, we now know that Trump’s approval rating has fallen behind, well, just about everything that’s universally disliked. Who would’ve thought we’d see a day when Trump couldn’t even beat lice in a popularity contest? The polls are here, people. And, believe it or not, America needed this data, but didn’t know it wanted it.
On the flip side, we’ve got Sanders voters and the possibility of them crossing party lines. With 2016 in the rearview mirror, the question is: will Bernie’s base be enough to sway the next election, or are we just getting a bit too early with this talk of general election polling? Spoiler alert: we’re not. We can’t help it, we love to dig into the numbers—no matter how early it is.
Speaking of early discussions, have you noticed how everyone’s talking about socialism these days? Well, not according to Gallup. Their data shows that socialism still isn’t quite having its moment. But capitalism? That’s still going strong. Who knew that the public’s political leanings would be so deeply entrenched in the 21st century?
And here’s a fun fact we can all appreciate: people are spending more time on longform articles than on shorter, quick-bite content. Facebook may be driving more visitors to longform content, but it’s Twitter users who are getting all the engagement. Take note, media world!
Of course, we’re not just talking politics today. There’s some serious dating app business to discuss. According to YouGov, we’re diving into profiles and trying to figure out just how to score that perfect match. But don’t get too excited—Kristen and I aren’t actually going to start helping you with your online profiles… or are we?
Lastly, we have to take a moment to laugh at the idea that “Make America Great Again” could get a makeover to something even less appealing: “Trump: more popular than hemorrhoids.” But honestly, how does Trump fare when compared to school testing? Well, we’ll leave that question for further study, but one thing is clear—Trump’s numbers are doing some serious fluctuating, and we’re here to track it all.
Before we go, we can’t forget to shout out the retro trends making a comeback, like longform content and good old-fashioned pencils. The world is a weird place, but we’re glad you’re along for the ride with us.
